About the QCWA

A little bit about the QCWA

In August 1922 an open conference for women decided that a Country Women’s Association should be formed in Queensland. In the beginning only women whose income was derived from the land were eligible to become members. Over the decades this has changed with members now coming from across the State in both urban and rural areas. What hasn’t changed are the objectives of the QCWA – to support women and children, to be active in the local community and to promote friendship and understanding.

No city is too large or any rural location too isolated – members of the QCWA are located throughout Queensland. Local branches offer a host of activities – cookery, dressmaking, public speaking, handcraft, knitting and patchwork, history groups, social days and fundraising – to name a few. As well they offer friendship and support, not just to members but to the wider community.

Whilst the QCWA is a non party political, non sectarian organisation it does lobby governments and other organisations on issues considered important to its members. Over the years the QCWA has been successful in bringing about positive change to communities.

Australia Wide Affiliation

The QCWA is part of the umbrella organisation the Country Women’s Association of Australia (CWA of A). Each of the states operate autonomous organisations that are also part of the CWA of A. You can find out about our sister organisations here.

International Affiliation

The QCWA is affiliated with the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) an international organisation that holds consultative rights on several United Nations agencies. As a result of this association the QCWA is able to provide financial and in kind support to women and families across the world.

So you can see that there is much more to the QCWA than meets the eye. It’s an organisation that is well worth joining.
